armrest removal/installation guide

installation guide summary

This guide will assist in explaining how to remove the front, center armrest from a GLS or GLX trim Mk. IV VW. It is also possible to install an armrest in a GL trim Mk. IV VW using this guide by simply reversing the procedure shown below, along with purchasing all the necessary parts.

For removal, the procedure basically involves removing four torx head screws; two are on either side of the center console surrounding the shiftknob, and two are beneath the rear ashtray. The pocket (1J0 858 373 C 2QL) and lining (1J0 863 328 C B41) that will replace the armrest assembly must be purchased from a VW dealer.

tools needed

  • A socket wrench
  • A torx head screwdriver

installation instructions

  1. The easiest way to work with the armrest is in the up position. Before beginning make sure that there is nothing small inside the armrest that could possibly get jammed in the cover hinge.
  2. Pull off the cover on the left side of the armrest, as shown below.
  3. There is a single bolt that holds the armrest in place.
  4. Remove the bolt using a socket wrench, set the bolt aside somewhere where it will not be lost.
  5. Remove the plastic covers covering the torx screws on either side. They will be found between the front seats and the center console. These hold the front end of the center console in place.
  6. Unscrew both torx screws.
  7. If applicable, pull out the rear cupholder completely and remove the rear astray or insert. There are another two torx screws beneath the ashtray or insert which hold the rear end of the center console in place.
  8. Remove both torx screws.
  9. Lift the center console out partially in order to be able to unscrew the armrest bracket. Take care with this part of the procedure as the plastic could break. The front end of the center console has a lip which is held in place by the plastic surrounding the gearshift. The rear end of the console must be lifted back and up, while also lifting the area covering the lip down and back, this is where a helping hand would be of use. Do not remove the console completely, just enough so that the bracket can be unscrewed.
  10. Unscrew the bracket.
  11. Reassemble the center console and install the pocket and lining that replace the armrest into the hole. Make sure all the carpeting is in place and tucked away where it is supposed to be.
