info notes

This section was initially created to provide a record for what I had done to my car, while at the same time being accesible information for the masses. Everything in this section is geared towards those inclined to performing do-it-yourself type projects, and all though this is not the extent of what I have done to Mk. IVs, it represents a significant bulk of it.

Following is a slightly more detailed description of the links in the menu so that they might make more sense:

armrest - this guide can be followed for both the installation and removal of the armrest in the mk. ivs. i removed my armrest because i have long arms, and it got in the way of my 2nd and 4th gear shifts (funny bone hell). others like to have it as a storage place, as well as to lean on... to each his own.

cd changer - this procedure was created because of my penchant for being "monetarily prudent". i was not willing to pay several hundred dollars for the purchase and installation of an oem changer when i found out that a cheaper, identical alternative option was available. that alternative is the panasonic cxdp-610, which is actually the exact same thing as the oem changer, except the latter has the correct socket built in, and has vw all over it. this section will give tips on where to purchase the changer, what parts are needed and how to install it.

emblem - this procedure was created by nianmuzik and comgengti. it outlines removing the badge on a golf and painting it to match the color of the car. This mod has not been done to my car.

headlights - this is a guide to adjusting the level and bias of the beams for all mk. iv headlights. this guide does not currently cover how to install head lights on a mk. iv.

headunit - based on the installation of my old pioneer deh-p4000, this procedure outlines in detail what needs to be done in order to install and aftermarket headunit in a mk. iv volkswagen. each step is seperated into its own section complete with a list of tools and parts required, as well as what to do (obviously).

maf - vws have the unfortunate tendency to come from the factory with really, really crappy maf (mass air flow) sensors. some of the mafs react well to the cleaning procedure found in this guide because they are actually dirty from long term use. others do not simply because they are faulty, an example of which is a large batch of the mk. iv mafs which were duds straight out of the bosch factory. some more is covered in the preface to the actual guide regarding these faulty mafs and what to do.

this procedure is not my sole creation, it is a conglomeration of bits and pieces of information that I found on the net and decided to compile. credit goes out to all those who helped with input and constructive criticism, whether or not you were asked.

shiftknob - i replaced the burl wood shiftknob (along with the dash trim) as soon as i found an oem alternative because i think wood looks really silly in a car that holds any connotation of sportiness. besides the wood knobs get slippery when your hands get sweaty from driving, and that's a bad thing...

tail lights - my car has gone through more sets of tail lights than the number of years i have had it, and i am still not happy. there are also 2 nuts missing from the tail light assemblies that apparently do not exist anywhere else in the world, so hopefully you will avoid incurring the same losses if you follow these instruction faithfully.
