shiftknob removal/installation guide

installation guide summary

This guide will assist in removing and installing an OEM VW shiftknob, or removing one for the installation of an aftermarket one. In the case of the OEM shiftknobs, the only part that is needed is the shiftknob and boot, which should come as one part. An adaptor maybe need in order to make a shiftknob and boot fit together if they are sourced from different manufacturers, although many people have had success installing their Conrero and Momo assemblies with vehicle specific adaptors.

tools needed

  • A plier that can cut through metal

removal/installation instructions

  1. The boot is held in place by a plastic ring at its base. In order to remove the ring find it under the boot, then push it forward while pulling up. It will take a bit of force but be careful not to break the ring. Pic 1 shows the original wood shiftknob from a North American-spec GLX trim level car, pic 2 shows the removal, pic 3 shows the tabs that hold the ring in place
  2. Once the boot has been removed, the ring that holds it down should be visible. Undo the boot from the ring and set the ring aside (see pic 4). Pic 5 shows the ring, note the lip on the front (left side in pic) of the ring.
  3. Pull the boot up and you will be able to see how the shift knob is held in place (pic 6). There is a brass ring that needs to be clipped using the pliers (pic 7). It needs to be broken off completely, so if you plan on selling your shift knob, you will need to buy a new brass ring.
  4. After the brass ring has been clipped, simply pull up on the knob and it will come off with some force (pic 8).
  5. Prepare the new knob by pulling the boot up. Pic 9 shows the new and old knobs side by side.
  6. Be sure the shift pattern is straight, then push down on the knob and it should click into place . The new knob (if it is OEM) should come with a new brass ring, you will need to tighten this. Part of the brass ring sticks out to form a squared off part, you need to push the base of this part together to tighten it.
  7. The new boot needs to be fitted around the plastic ring . Make sure the stitching is on the correct way. The ring has a lip on one end, that end is forward. Fit the boot around the ring, there is a groove where the edges of the boot should fit (pic 10).
  8. Push the ring with the fitted boot forward and down into place, it will click into place. Again, be gentle so as not to break the ring.
  9. Push the boot back into place and you should be all set! Pic 11 shows the finished product.
